The Starland Rehabilitation project involved the preservation of three significant buildings within two blocks along East 40th Street in the Thomas Square Streetcar National Register historic district. With the assistance of our preservation team, this project attained over $628,000 in federal and state historic tax incentives which were used to help finance the construction.
The Chipman-Mallard-Worrel House was constructed in 1898 in the Second Empire Style. The Waldhauer-Park Duplex was originally constructed in 1910 using Belgian Blocks, a building material popular in the district at the time, in the Neoclassical Revival style. The Lemaire-Williams duplex was also constructed in 1910 in the Neoclassical Revival style but has a much different appearance with a wood clapboard exterior and side hall plan.
The work undertaken was executed to exceed local and national preservation standards and received both federal and state historic tax incentives. The project received the Historic Savannah Foundation award for Excellence in Historic Preservation in 2021 and is serving as a catalyst for the rehabilitation of surrounding properties.
